Lay Mission Leadership Job Description

Southwest California Synod, ELCA

 

The Southwest California Synod is now accepting applications for a new full time position as Assistant to the Bishop for Lay Mission Leadership. This person will join Bishop Dean Nelson and his staff to provide oversight for the Synod’s many Lay Ministry training programs and ministries.  

 Interested persons should submit their resumes or Mobility Papers to Bishop Dean Nelson at the Southwest California Synod office by May 2, 2008.  Anticipated start date for the new Assistant will be September 1, 2008.

 Responsibilities:

Oversee and coordinate the Synod’s Lay School for Equipping Leaders for Mission (ELM Project);

bullet

Work with the Bishop and the Synod’s Lay Leadership Team in helping the Synod and its congregation to do Intentional outreach to children, youth and young adults;

bullet

Work with the Bishop and the Synod’s Lay Leadership Team to identify, support and train lay leaders who Witness and serve in their congregations and daily life;

bullet

Represent the Synod on the Board of Lutheran Schools of Southern California and Hawaii;

bullet

Represent the Synod on the Board of Lutheran Youth Organization;

bullet

Represent the Synod on the Young Adult Task Force;

bullet

Represent the Synod of the Board of Lutheran Retreats, Camps and Conferences;

bullet

Represent the Synod on the Tri Synodical Campus Ministry Board;

bullet

Work with the Bishop and Staff to provide training for lay persons who serve in leadership positions in their congregations; and,

bullet

Attend Synod Staff meetings, Synod Council and other meetings as requested by the Bishop.

 

Requirements:

bullet

Bachelor of Arts Degree or equivalent;

bullet

Membership in an ELCA congregation;

bullet

Experience in working with and training lay persons for leadership;

bullet

Excellent ability to communicate verbally and orally with a variety of persons;

bullet

Strong interpersonal skills to work well with a multi-cultural Synod Staff;

bullet

Ability to drive throughout the Synod and travel as required;

bullet

Adequate Computer skills; and

bullet

References and Background Checks.

The position is open to both rostered leaders and lay persons.
