Equipping Leaders for Mission (ELM) is a two-year process of spiritual formation through theological and practical education for members of Southwest California Synod congregations.

Specialized (Second-Year) Courses

Our first course for the second year will be “Baptismal Living” with Rev. Dr. Thom Johnson, ELCA Pastor and Adjunct Professor at Claremont School of Theology in the area of Religious Education.  This course will be held Friday, September 25th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, September 26th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at St. John’s, Arroyo Grande.

 

1.  Evangelist TrackOutreach and Witness, Personal Witnessing, Communications and Evangelism, Contextual Evangelism, Use of New Technologies for Evangelism, Preparing Lay Callers, etc.

2.  Catechist Track: Nurturing Faith Through Stages of Life, Parish Education:  Models and Methods, Adult Catechumenate, Spiritual Gifts, Youth Ministry, etc.

3.  Diaconate Track:  Community Service, Public Policy, Community Organizing, etc.

Instructors will include faculty from California Lutheran University, Fuller Seminary, Synod Staff and Pastors and Lay Leaders from Southwest California Synod

Requirements for Synod Certification

· 116 Contact Hours will be required to receive Synod Certification

 

· 80 hours in core courses

 

· 36 hours in specialized track

 

The cost for the full two year course leading to Synod Certification is $250. Scholarships are available — contact Pastor Laurie Arroyo at (818) 507-9591 x102 or larroyo@socalsynod.org.

The fee for participants who do not wish to take the full course but wish to attend selected courses will be $20 for each 4 contact hours (i.e.: a four hour course will have a fee of $20, an eight hour course a fee of $40, a 16 hour course a fee of $80. Note that the core courses are all 16 hour courses). Text books are not included in the registration fee.
