Who We Are

For nearly 70 years First Lutheran School (FLS) has provided the South Bay area of Los Angeles County with excellence in Christ-centered education. FLS is fully WASC accredited, serving more than 400 students from infancy through 8thGrade. Through a variety of programs – including an award winning Early Education Center, Elementary and Middle School, before/after school childcare and enrichment programs - FLS seeks to engage children and their families, inspire faith and respect for others, and achieve each student’s full potential as a citizen of the world and a child of God.

Summary

The First Lutheran Church and School (FLCS) Principal and Director of Weekday Education supervises, supports and inspires the FLS departments including the Early Education Center (infant to age 5), Weekday School (Transitional Kindergarten through 8th Grade), before/after school programs, and other ancillary programs.

The FLCS Principal and Director of Weekday Education oversees the development and marketing, community activities, personnel management, disciplinary and professional development activities, and emergency procedures for FLS, while working collaboratively with the Directors of the various FLS departments.

The FLCS Principal and Director of Weekday Education works in partnership with the FLS Managing Director and senior management to create operational policies and procedures consistent with FLS philosophy, mission, values and goals.

Qualifications/Minimum Requirements

  • Current, valid California teaching credential or equivalent from another state
  • Minimum 5 years teaching experience in the classroom
  • Master’s degree in education.  Administrative credential is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated experience in school leadership, personnel management, communication, and advancement efforts. Parochial school experience preferred 

The successful candidate will:

Be responsible for supervision and oversight of the entire FLS family of ministries and Weekday School (Transitional Kindergarten - Grade 8) while supervising the directors of the Early Education Center (infant-age 4), before/after school programs, and other ancillary programs;

Manage, evaluate, and supervise, together with the FLS Managing Director and other staff, effective and clear procedures for the operations of the Weekday School, consistent with FLS philosophy, mission, values, and goals, including instructional programs, extracurricular activities, development and marketing, and disciplinary systems;

Supervise the instructional programs of the Weekday School, observing classes on a regular basis to encourage the use of a variety of instructional strategies consistent with best practices and research regarding learning, child development, and technologies;

Ensure a safe and productive learning environment by encouraging students to take responsibility for behavior, and inspiring high morale and community among staff, students, and families in our care;

Convene and conduct regular meetings and gatherings and communicate regularly and effectively with FLCS and FLS stakeholders, seeking the support and advice necessary to create and sustain a cooperative relationship of growth and excellence. This includes monthly attendance at the FLCS Congregation Council, Executive Board, School Board, and Parent-Teacher Fellowship;

Maintain a focus for identifying and addressing special needs of students including health-related concerns and developmental needs, as well as students’ and families’ physical, emotional, and spiritual needs;

Model an authentic and vital Christian faith, respectful of the breadth of faith traditions of the FLS community. Encourage a spirit conducive to engagement, inspiration, and achievement across school programs and departments.
