Organist and Accompanist – St. Mark’s, Hacienda Heights

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Hacienda Heights, CA is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We are a family-sized, multi-generational congregation with a Pre-8th grade school and approximately 100 worshippers per Sunday

Duties and responsibilities

  • Works and collaborates with the Pastor and Director of Choirs and Music Groups to create a well-planned and meaningful worship service
  • Provide instrumental music leadership for worship services and be able to play wide range of musical styles form traditional hymns to contemporary worship music
  • In conjunction with the pastor and choral director(s), plans music for worship
  • Play accompanist music for children’s choirs and adult choir/ensemble when possible
  • Be skilled at playing the organ and piano for all services, including extra services during Lent, Easter and Christmas
  • Consult on maintenance/tuning of pianos and organ
  • Organizes and maintains music library for the organ and piano and worship service materials
  • When needed, recruit soloists and musicians and provide music for and rehearse with them.
  • Have or gain proficiency of the church’s sound system to help with the audio of singers or musicians so that it is properly heard by the congregation in person and online.
  • Provide organ and/or piano music for funerals, memorials services, and weddings, as available and needed.
  • As available, contribute musical assistance for non-worship activities, such as brunches and caroling
  • Attends monthly Worship Committee meetings and regular meets with the Pastor to help for planning upcoming worship and reviewing past worship services

Operational Information

1) Arrange for Substitutes when not able to work or for a scheduled vacation.
2) If the organist/accompanist has any issues or concerns, the director should see the pastor and/or the congregational President.
3) Keys will be distributed to the organist/accompanist for these rooms in the church: the sanctuary and office.
4) A background check is required along with being vaccinated against Covid-19.

Ecclesial Responsibilities

1) As a spiritual leader, it is imperative the Director commits to personal and spiritual growth.
2) You need to be a Christian and be active in a church and familiar with Lutheran theology/liturgy

Hours and Compensation

This position is part-time, salaried, and includes playing for weekly worship and accompanist for choirs during the 10 months they meet when possible. 2 paid weeks off will be included in the compensation. Pay is commensurate with skills and experience.
