Communications Director – Southwest California and Pacifica Synods

Overview

The Communications Director (CD) will work in collaboration with the bishops of the Southwest California Synod and the Pacifica Synod to envision, create, and manage a comprehensive communications program for both synods. This program will include internal and external communications as well as public relations with local and national media outlets. The Communications Director is a full-time position split equally between the two synods and will report directly to the synod bishops.

Responsibilities

  • Website Creation and Maintenance
    -The CD will oversee the work of a web designer who will create a new website for each synod.
    -The CD will also maintain content for accuracy.
  • Social Media Content Creation and Promotion
    -The CD will generate three posts per week that will go out on several platforms.
    -The CD will work with synod bishops to determine the frequency and content of weekly social media posts, podcasts and other media offerings.
  • Direct Communications with Congregations and Rostered Leaders
    -The CD will write emails and letters that will keep congregations and leaders
    informed about events, grants, and opportunities well in advance.
    -In the Southwest California Synod, the CD will also coordinate translations of most material into
    Spanish and Mandarin.
  • Public Relations Announcements
    -The CD will develop relationships with local and national media outlets to promote stories that enhance the mission of the church.
  • Crisis Communications Strategy and Implementation
    -The CD will work with the bishops and Synod Vice-Presidents to respond quickly and professionally to world, local and ecclesial events that impact the church.
  • Event Promotion and Registration
    -The CD will promote conferences, workshops and assemblies held by the synods.
    -The CD will coordinate online and in-person registrations for events as each synod determines.
  • Coordinate communications between ELCA national church and synods
    -The CD will disseminate information sent by the national church to the congregations of the synods and offer feedback to communications personnel at the ELCA Lutheran Center that will improve communication streams.
  • Branding and Marketing Analysis
    -The CD will look at the synod’s logos, web presence, and outward facing publications to develop aesthetically pleasing and effective brands.
    -The CD may be invited to work with staff to shape synodical mission and ministry goals and communication strategies.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $$58,240 - $70,000, depending on experience and education. In addition, health care insurance and an employer contribution to a retirement account will be included. The position starts with two weeks paid vacation per year, increasing to three weeks after five years of employment.
