Bishop's Call to Love Thy Neighbor…and Feed Them
A Call to Love the Neighbor... and Feed Them
Beloved in Christ,
When Jesus walked the earth, he made a point of eating with sinners and strangers. He fed 5000 people in one miracle, and 4000 in another. Jesus knew deeply how important food is, not just to our bodies, but to our community. Indeed, at the Last Supper he used bread and wine to indelibly tie his followers to his own body and blood.
As millions of Americans lose SNAP benefits this week, I invite you to wonder how you might help the hungry. Check with a local food bank. Do they need food? Money? Volunteers? Ask your pastor if their discretionary fund needs extra money. Are they receiving more discreet requests for assistance? Do people need additional support, like babysitting while they find a second job? Do they need transportation help because they can't afford the bus and the groceries?
The hungry are among us, in our churches, in our schools, in our families. They usually suffer in silence. We do not want to expose those who need help, or shame them, but there are ways you can help, gently, powerfully, with money and your presence. Pray for God's guidance to find those you can help. And may God inspire you to be generous and loving.
God bless us all,
Bishop Brenda Bos
