Strengthening Senior Ministry: A Synodical Partnership
As our population ages, our congregations are aging as well. Seniors have long been vital to the mission and ministry of the church—sharing generously of their time, talents, and treasures. Their wisdom and discipleship have shaped congregational life for generations. Yet many find it increasingly difficult to participate as fully as they once did, even though their faith life and sense of vocation remain strong.
In response to these changing realities, the synod has a Senior Adult Ministries program to assist congregations in caring for and walking alongside their senior members. This ministry is designed to equip congregations with workshops, literature, resources, and fellowship ideas tailored to senior adults and caregivers.
Available offerings include workshops and speakers on accessibility and mobility, language sensitivity and affirmation, nutrition and health, safety, wellness, and spiritual care. These resources can be adapted for congregations of any size and can be offered in-person or online. The program also provides guidance and ideas for building intergenerational connections, service opportunities, pastoral support, and the continued engagement of seniors who can no longer attend as regularly as before.
Senior Adult Ministry is not solely about meeting needs—it is about honoring gifts. Our elders continue to possess abundant wisdom, faith, and vocational purpose. The ministry seeks to affirm their ongoing role in the life of the congregation, whether they attend weekly or participate from home.
Deacon Cecelia, Assistant to the Bishop for Senior Adult Ministries, is available to connect with pastors, council presidents, or senior ministry liaisons to explore ways that this synodical support can support your congregation’s mission.
Together, we can ensure that our senior members remain valued, connected, and fully part of the Body of Christ.
